12 Ways to Blend Storage & Style

It seems everywhere you look there are baskets, especially in people’s homes. Baskets are a staple of both organization and style and if you love the bohemian look in your home, baskets are big component in achieving that look, due their natural colors and practicality.

But where did these little (or big) weaved wonders come from?

The history of baskets is deeply entwined with the history of human civilization itself. Baskets are among the oldest known artifacts crafted by humans and have played a crucial role in various aspects of human life throughout history.

Baskets have been used by humans for tens of thousands of years. Early humans likely used baskets made from materials like leaves, grasses, and branches for gathering, transporting, and storing food & water, as well as for carrying infants and goods. In medieval Europe, baskets continued to be essential items for daily life. They were used for carrying produce to markets, storing grains, and even for laundry purposes.

Indigenous cultures across the globe have a rich tradition of basket weaving. From Native American tribes to Aboriginal Australians, baskets were and continue to be integral parts of cultural and artistic expression.

The industrial revolution brought about significant changes in the way baskets were made and used. While traditional basket weaving techniques persisted, mass production methods led to the availability of cheaper, mass-produced baskets made from materials like metal, plastic, and wire.

Despite the availability of modern materials, traditional basket weaving techniques are still practiced and celebrated in many parts of the world. Basket weaving is considered both an art form and a practical craft. Many artisans around the world specialize in basket making, preserving traditional techniques while also incorporating contemporary designs and materials.

In essence, the history of baskets mirrors the history of human civilization, reflecting our ingenuity, resourcefulness, and cultural diversity throughout the ages.

So now that you have had your history lesson and will hopefully appreciate the work and craftsmanship that goes into them, let’s explore how baskets can help you get organized while adding some style and warmth to any space.

Here are 12 ways to use baskets in your home for storage and style:

Wall Art Display: Install baskets of various shapes, sizes, and colors on your wall to create an eye-catching display. You can arrange them in a symmetrical pattern or mix and match for a more eclectic, boho look. Need ideas? Check out Pinterest and other Boho decorating groups. There is no right or wrong when it comes to creating a basket or gallery wall. It is all about your style and how you want it to fit your wall.

Plant Holders: Use baskets as stylish plant holders. Simply place potted plants inside the baskets and display them on shelves, tables, or even hang them from the ceiling for a bohemian vibe. One word of advice: remove baskets when watering. Moisture can ruin your baskets and you want them to last a long time.

Kitchen Organization: In the kitchen, use baskets to organize items such as fruits, vegetables, spices, or utensils. You can place small baskets inside cabinets or on countertops to keep things tidy and easily accessible.

Toy Storage: If you have children, use baskets to corral toys and games. Large, sturdy baskets can hold stuffed animals, blocks, and other playthings, while smaller baskets are perfect for organizing art supplies or puzzles. Have fur kids? Baskets make a great storage solution for all those squeaky toys, balls and bones. We have several around our house!

Linens and Towel Storage: Roll up towels and neatly stack them inside baskets for a spa-like feel in your bathroom. You can also use baskets to store extra linens, such as sheets and blankets, in closets or under beds.

Laundry Hampers:

Instead of traditional laundry hampers, use woven baskets to collect dirty clothes. Baskets with handles make it easy to transport laundry to the washing machine, and their natural texture adds warmth to the space.

Entryway Catch-All: Place a basket near your entryway to serve as a catch-all for keys, sunglasses, wallets, and other everyday essentials. This helps keep clutter at bay while adding a touch of rustic charm to your foyer.

Magazine and Book Storage: Keep your reading materials organized by storing magazines, books, and newspapers in decorative baskets. Place them next to your favorite reading spot or by the bedside for easy access.

Craft Supplies: If you enjoy crafting, use baskets to store yarn, fabric, knitting needles, and other supplies. Label the baskets for easy identification and stack them on shelves or tuck them away in a dedicated crafting corner.

Bathroom Storage & Organization: Baskets are great for storing makeup, beauty products, even everyday toiletries and keep your counters clear and organized. You can even use smaller ones for Qtips, cotton balls and hair clips.

Pet Bed: Turn a sturdy, shallow basket into a cozy bed for your furry friend. Line the bottom with a soft blanket, pillow or cushion for extra comfort, and place it in a quiet corner where your pet can relax and unwind.

Hanging Light Shade:

Turn a larger basket into a hanging light fixture. All you need is a large basket, a hanging light fixture kit and a light bulb. Need a step-by-step tutorial?  Where to find baskets that won’t break the bank.

Baskets are beautiful, but if you have walked into any home store to buy some recently, you will see they can cost a pretty penny. Invest in ones you love or certain sizes you need. Also, check out discount home stores like Ross, Home Goods, Burlington and others for better deals.

However, my favorite place to score baskets is at thrift stores. You can find dozens of baskets in every shape, size and color for just a few dollars. Not to mention you are reusing and repurposing, so they are not going into landfills, which is a big bonus.

You can also find them at garage sales, estate auctions and I have found a ton at the Good Will bins (Good Will Outlets). There you pay by weight and since baskets weigh hardly anything, you can score some fantastic finds for pennies on the dollar.

With a bit of creativity, baskets can be transformed into versatile storage solutions and decorative accents that enhance the beauty and functionality of your home. They are a great eco-friendly, storage and style solutions.  And if you are willing to look and have a little patience, you can find beautiful ones that will work with even the smallest budget.
